Didn't feel any drag at all. I think it's because Clariel opens the door to so many questions and then ends with none of the answers. I had next to no expectations on this. I had a deep sense of sadness getting to know Elinor, while remembering that she'll die when Sabriel was born. <br /><br />The two characters being apart didn't even register. <br /><br />Like you, I'd preorder another one in a heartbeat.
