Ok, before I go further, want to state that I listened to this last month while doing Believathon so, I decided to put this up now so I don’t get muddled. So, December is going to be a bit of a mixed-bag of books/audiobooks from when I read/listen to them. Plus, with Christmas and New Year round the corner, am going to squeeze them in as much as possible, so sorry in advance for the blog post overload. 

Now, we have housekeeping out of the way, Daisy Jones. As you know, I audiobooked The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and thoroughly enjoyed myself with it. I'm thinking of relistening to this in the New Year. And I audiobooked Evidence of the Affair and I liked that a lot. So, going into this, I was excited that it would make a good, if not great, read. Plus, everyone I know who had read this has loved it, so high hopes. 

In the 1970s, Daisy Jones and the Six were rising stars in the rock n roll scene! Their album, Aurora, is rising high in the charts and their tour is selling out. Then, on 12th July, 1979, the seven break up, halfway through their tour. But no one knows why… 

Who knows the truth of what happened that day and the events leading up to it? Daisy Jones, the brilliant songwriter but high functioning drug addict? The egotistical Dunne brothers who control everything the band does? The angry guitarist? The binge-drinking dummer? The Bassist looking to the future? The keyboardist who won’t fit into her gender role? Or the frontman’s wife, who knows that one wrong step from her husband can result in him falling off the wagon or that the connection between him and Daisy is electric? 

There’s never one side to the truth.

Ok, this was a bit of a curveball. After audiobooking The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and totally enjoying myself with it, I was going to read Daisy Jones and the Six. I even bought the hardback for a £5 when it was on offer. And I have every plan to read this. Plus, with the past few months reading more “grown-up” reads and, every now and again, feeling a bit uncertain of the Pewter Wolf, its future and whether I still am a YA book blogger and am now more an adult book blogger (I am in my 30s, after all), I was planning to have a month or two reading whatever the **** I wanted. 

So, why did I decide to audiobook this? Well, I requested it on Amazon’s Prime Reading (don’t ask how I discovered this - I have Stillhouse Lake by Rachel Caine on this and, from everyone’s reaction, I need to read this soonish…), then changed my mind but, somehow, I downloaded and kept the audiobook version and, one day, after a long day at work and knowing I had a bit of a drive home (for once I drove to work, not car-shared), I popped this on as wasn’t in the mood for music and had caught up with my podcasts & audiobooks (*coughs* You haven’t listened to Kings of the Wyld and Great Small Things yet, Andrew *cough*). 

It’s 1976 and David Mayer receives a letter from Carrie Allsop, a woman he has never met. In the letter, Carrie reveals that she’s discovered that her husband and David’s wife are having an affair. From their correspondence, the two reveal their shock, hurt and the painful details about their spouses’s affair. And therough their letters, the pair comfort each other as they try and figure out what they are going to do next…

It feels like everyone - and I mean everyone - has read Evelyn Hugo and is raving about it. And it was’t till recently that I decided to go for it with this, though I have been eyeing the audiobook for months. 

Monique Grant just can’t believe what’s happening to her. Her professional life is going nowhere and her husband has left her, so when she is picked to do an interview with ageing and reclusive Hollywood icon, Evelyn Hugo, she can’t believe her luck. And the fact that Evelyn demanded her or she wasn’t going to do the article makes everyone astounded. Why did Evelyn Hugo, who could have anyone she wanted, want Monique, a nobody of a journalist? 

But it gets weirder as, when Monique meets Evelyn, Evelyn tells her that there will be no article. Instead, Evelyn wants Monique to write her biography and publish it after Evelyn’s death. It would be a bestseller without even trying as Evelyn is Hollywood royalty and her love life and her seven husbands filled articles throughout the 1950’s all the way through to the 1980’s when she left the industry. Monique wants to do it as she has two questions she wants answered: why did Evelyn so desperately wanted her to write her biography and who was the love of Evelyn’s life? 

The answers to both are surprising and devastating.
