Self-Isolation #re3 - Twilight

  • Title And Author: Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
  • Publisher: Atom
  • Physical, eBook or Audiobook: Audiobook
  • Bought, Borrowed or Gifted: Bought
  • Length: 513 Pages or 12 Hours 51 Minutes

Well, this is a turn-up for the books. I decided to reread Twilight. Now, I hold this series quite close to my heart (not Harry Potter close, but I do have affection for this series) and in times of darkness, such as self-isolation/furlodged due to COVID-19, sometimes rereading a book you love or rewatching that TV show, film or playing that video game is needed.

So, not sure why I went to Twilight and not my normal go-on of Harry Potter or Sabriel, but Twilight I did.

Now, this isn’t a review. There is no point me doing a review for this book as we all agree that, yes, this is a fun, beach read and a perfect read for something to sweep you along and you happily go along with it. HOWEVER, this book is very problematic.

The book is very much split into two parts. The first half focuses on the romance, the falling in love for the first time. It’s Bella moving to Forks and falling into lust then love with Edward over a period of several weeks/months. I keep forgetting that the first chunk of the book takes place over a long period of time. That’s because Bella rarely mentions time pasting.

And yes, people have said Bella is very blank-state Mary-Sue character as you insert yourself into her character (had to rewrite that line as “insert yourself into her” sounds increasely filthy!), and because she’s falling in love for the first time, we too are inserting our first time as well. Plus, as we all know, when you are at the beginning of a relationship, we all are wearing rose-tinted glasses and inserting the qualities we most admire onto the other person and not seeing their flaws, hence why Bella sees Edward’s behaviour as romantic and not as toxic masculainy (though why no one else in the book sees it is anyone’s guess).

Then we have the thriller second-half. I’m not against this - I read/audiobook most of this section in one or two days, but I sense that there were some aspects that were a little too easy. A little too convenient. But I read this section at speed and most readers forget this latter part as, when we think about Twilight and the Saga as a whole, we remember the romance.

I’m surprised at some of the writing. In some places, it’s fairly solid and others, not so much. As someone who has read most of Stephenie’s novel (barring the Eclipse novel, The Second Short Life of Bree Tanner), I can see that she’s grown as a storyteller and go better with her plotting. Her adult novels, The Host and The Chemist are far better and much stronger (though, out of the two, I would say The Host is far superior. Though I do think The Chemist has its moments and would work much better as a TV show, similar vine to Killing Eve, The Blacklist or Blindspot).

It was nice going down nostalgia reading lane, and seeing as I want to do a lot more rereads as part of my “Ten Years Book Blogging”, it was nice to reread this and make plans to reread a few other titles… gonna keep these under my hat, for now, though keep eyes peeled on my #re3 page as they might offer you clues…

GoodRead - Life And Death

Of course I was going to read this. Of course I would! I read Twilight nearly ten years ago (just before New Moon came out. I couldn't buy the hardback - it had an awful cover!) and now, here we are, celebrating it being published for 10 years. And, out of nowhere, Stephanie drops Life and Death on the fandom and the fans are freaking out over it. A new Stephanie Meyer?!

Well, technically, yes and no. It's a reimagining of Twilight, but nearly all the characters have been gender-swapped (Bella is now Beaufort or Beau and Edward is now Edythe). The only characters that have stayed the same are Charlie and Renee (Stephenie explains why in her foreword). But, interestingly, we have more words/pages. And it might not be the words you'll be expecting.

But let me come to that later.

So, most (if not, all) of us know the story of Twilight. But Life and Death follows Beaufort (or Beau, for short), as he moves to Forks and, not long after that, he meets Edythe Cullen, a girl unlike any he has met before. But, on their first meeting, without even saying a word to him, Edythe reacts like she hates him. Only to act normal and, even pleasant, the next time they meet a week later.

As Beau tries to figure the mysterious Edythe out, he doesn't realise that he's putting himself in danger. His frenzied first love makes him blind to the dangers crashing towards him. Soon, there will be no turning back...

Ok, I am going to start by saying this: I forgot how much fun reading a Stephenie Meyer book was. Yes, she gets some stick for her writing, but she's fun. I was planning to read this as a side project while I read my "real" book, but this took over my life for a week. Stephenie still knows how to hook her readers.

The story itself was interesting. While gender-flipping characters isn't anything new to fan-fiction writers, this is new for published author and it was fascinating to see what the story would have been like if the roles were reversed. If it was a human boy that fell in love with a vampire girl? I get why Stephenie did it - she got sick of people saying Bella was a damsel in distress all the time and wanted to see if this would be the case if the genders were flipped - and there are elements when this works really well.

However, there are times when this doesn't work or it feels jarring. At times, the characters were saying things and I would stop for a moment as what that character said didn't feel right. It didn't feel true to these "new" characters. For example, The whole of chapter 13 - the famous Meadow scene - just felt out of place with the rest of the book. And what the characters - Beau and Edythe - were saying never felt right. It felt like they should be saying the others's lines. I wonder if it's because I am so use to this chapter, I just expected it to flow the same way.

I wonder if I would have the same reaction if it was a LGBT reimagining. With the love story being Bella/Edythe or Beaufort/Edward? Or maybe even a Jacob/Edward?

And the names. I liked most of the names used, but some characters names were either "Huh?" or just laughable. I mean, Royal? Royal?! Are you actually kidding me?

Another thing that I had problems with was Beau's and Edythe's actions. In Twilight, both Bella and Edward don't exactly do sane actions in their relationships. But when Beau and Edythe do them, these actions take a sinister turn. There were several moments I thought it was going to go Single White Female on us. If you were reading this for relationship advice, what you would been reading is a love story about one dangerously unhealthy relationship.

Now, I have read some blogpost about the ending. I won't go near that as... well... spoilers. But fans will love it, while casual readers might find it a bit rushed and maybe wanting an extra 50 pages.

But my biggest rant is how you can read Life and Death. You have to buy a special hardback edition of Twilight: Ten Year Anniversary Edition. So you get one HUGE bind up, which isn't necessary as most/all fans will have at least one edition of Twilight. This is the same if you buy the eBook edition of the audiobook edition. You have to get both Twilight and Life and Death. This could be seen by many people - myself included - as a money-making ploy - not exactly the best way to thank fans for their loyalty nor to show respect to a book that many people see as the book that truly kickstarted YA.

I read this as bonus content, and while I had fun enjoying it, it still has issues and with that price tag... am quite torn over my feels on whether you should buy this or not. If only you could buy Life and Death SEPARATELY...

I think my reaction is mostly this: as a fan, I had a fun time reading this and I want to reread the series again (maybe next year. Or maybe just Twilight and New Moon. Maybe even The Host and this rumoured adult thriller that is in the works). But as a reader, I feel a bit disappointed. So very mixed feels on this, I'm afraid, dear blog readers.

Breaking Dawn: Part One Trailer

Last night, the trailer of Breaking Dawn Part One was revealed. And here it is!

Now, I've only just watched it now and my reaction is surprising. I don't know much about this director - Bill Condon - but it looks like he's going to try and make the first half of Breaking Dawn more action than romantic (and that's there by the buckle-load!). And it seems to me that all the Cullens have changed their hair (this is a running joke. Watch Jasper's hair through all four of the films and you'll see what I mean).

But, yeah, am surprised and quite pleased with this trailer. But what do you guys think?

Breaking Dawn: Part One Teaser Trailer

As some of you guys know, the teaser trailer for BREAKING DAWN: PART ONE was revealed to the world last night. (Not going to write up the teaser poster for BREAKING DAWN. Nothing exciting about it...) So, if you are a Bella, Edward or Jacob fan, have you seen the trailer?

Reactions? I'm surprised but I quite like it. I don't love the lingering shots but, apart from that, there's good vibes coming off this. *fingers crossed*

PS - I have heard rumours that if you're paying close attention, you might see the author, Stephenie Meyer, and scriptwriter of the films, Melissa Rosenberg, in this trailer...

Stephenie Meyer Press Release

My friends at Atom Books sent me a press release in connection with Stephenie Meyer and her new release, The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide. And I thought I would share with you...

LITTLE, BROWN BOOKS FOR YOUNG READERS
TO HOST AN INTIMATE GATHERING OF
TWILIGHT FANS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
TO MEET STEPHENIE MEYER

TWILIGHT INTERNATIONAL FAN EVENT
TO CELEBRATE UPCOMING RELEASE OF
THE TWILIGHT SAGA: THE OFFICIAL ILLUSTRATED GUIDE

ATOM FAN COMPETITION ON WWW.STEPHENIEMEYER.CO.UK

London (12th January, 2011) – Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, a division of Hachette Book Group, will host a special International Fan Event, featuring Twilight fans from around the world. Ten fans will be chosen to have an once-in-a-lifetime intimate meeting with international bestselling author Stephenie Meyer. The event coincides with the upcoming release of The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide (April 12, 2011; £17.99).

Little, Brown US is partnering with the Twilight Saga publishers around the globe to find the lucky Twilight fans who will attend this event. Atom (an imprint of Little, Brown Book Group UK) will be running a competition in their international English language territories (Australia, India, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and the UK) to find one super fan to join fans from Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico and Taiwan at the exclusive event. Each special guest will receive an advance copy of The Official Illustrated Guide and get to talk extensively with Meyer, who will answer their Twilight-related questions.

“The one thing I miss most about my first book tour was the chance I had then to spend quality time with my readers,” said Meyer. “At an event with just ten or twenty people, I was able to get to know everyone a little bit. I could also more effectively answer each person’s questions. I’m so excited to have that opportunity again, and to get to spend time with fans from many different places and backgrounds.”

“We receive hundreds of travel requests for Stephenie from our foreign publishing partners every year,” said Megan Tingley, Senior Vice President and Publisher of Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. “Since it is physically impossible for one author to be in so many places, we thought this would be a great way to bring some fans to her.”

Fans from Atom’s international English language territories will be invited to upload a short video clip explaining why they are the ultimate Twilight fan. Finalists from Australia, India, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and the UK will go on to a final judging round, from which the ultimate Twilight fan will be picked. Further details can be found at www.stepheniemeyer.co.uk.

Due to the intimate nature of this event, details regarding the location and timing are being kept confidential. Photos and additional details will be distributed upon the event’s conclusion.

The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide provides readers with exclusive new material and everything they need to further explore the unforgettable world Stephenie Meyer created in Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn and The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner. The Guide also includes character profiles, outtakes, a conversation with Meyer, genealogical charts, maps, extensive cross-references, and much more. Originally announced as “The Official Guide,” The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide includes illustrations from several artists, including Young Kim, the illustrator behind the #1 New York Times bestselling Twilight: The Graphic Novel, Volume 1.

In five years, Stephenie Meyer has become a worldwide publishing phenomenon. The Twilight Saga’s translation rights have been sold in nearly 50 countries and 116 million copies have been sold worldwide.

Random Twitter Moment (Doctor Who & Grey's Anatomy/Twilight Saga Related... Vaguely!)

I was chatting with a few people on Twitter about Doctor Who (so far, I like this new series!) and one mentioned something funny.

Doesn't the new Doctor (Matt Smith) look like Elizabeth Reaser from when she was in Grey's Anatomy (not in the Twilight Saga?)

She even made a photo to prove her point. What do you guys think?

Twilight: The Musical?

After watching part (not all! Not yet!) of StarKid’s “A Very Potter Musical” a while ago, I had the stupid idea of the Twilight Saga being turned into a musical. All tongue-in-cheek (with Pigfarts, of course). So, while bored one day and listening to the radio, I heard Katy Perry’s song (which one, you wonder… it’s not that hard), I changed some of the words of the chorus for a Twilight: The Musical.

I kissed a vampire and I liked it,
He tasted of mountain lion chap-stick,
I kissed a vampire, Just to try it,
I hope my werewolf friend doesn’t mind it,
It felt so good, it felt so right, Doesn’t mean I’ll get bitten tonight,
I kissed a vampire and I liked it,
I liked it!

(Why, yes, I was quite bored that day!)

HIDE & GO SEEK (aka THE HUNGER GAME) - A TwiFic

...And when you read this, you'll understand why I dislike reading and writing in the present tense! I find it very jarring as a reading (which is why I dislike "Book of the Dead" by Patrica Cornwell - but I do like "The Hours" by Michael Cunningham or the "Wake" Trilogy by Lisa McMann.)

So, enjoy, & forgive my awful present writing.

One.”

Running down the stairs. Grabbing the handrail as I slipped.

Two.”

Jump the last two steps. Lands oddly. Pain shoot up leg, but I ignore it.

Three.”

Runs towards the door.

Four.”

Yank the door open.

Five.”

Running down the corridor. The dark making it hard to see.

Six.”

Still running. I see a door. A Fire Exit! A way out!

Seven.”

I crash into the door. It opens as an alarm shrills out. There are stairs. Up? Down?

Eight.”

Down! I run down them, gripping the handrail as I go. There’s not enough time!

Nine.”

Keep running! Another door. I push through and run.

Ten! Coming! Ready or Not!

No!

I spin round in the dark corridor, running backwards.

I’m going to die. I’m never going to leave here alive.

I spin and run forwards. Only to skid to a stop.

They’re there. Standing as calm and as still as statues. All three pairs of red eyes on me.

A sob sticks unpleasantly in my throat. “No…”

“We found you,” the first member says. His voice sounds nice, pleasant even. Not a voice that should belong to a killer. “The game is over.”

I slowly back away; my insides go cold with terror and fear. “Who – what – are you?”

“That,” replies the first man, “is sadly not important. What is, however, is you.”

The second man, the man with the cropped hair, growls as he pulls back his lips to reveal unnaturally white teeth. The woman of the trio, her hair shocking red, gives a sideways glance to the cropped hair man then her gaze returns to me.

I take another step back, and they, in unison, take a step forward.

“This,” says the man with cropped hair, “is getting bored.”

“Yes,” agrees the woman. “This is getting tiresome.”

“Patience.” The first man comments as he waves a hand. “The game isn’t complete yet.”

They’re going to kill me! Why aren’t I running? Why aren’t I screaming?!

I take another step back, and my back hits the wall. I try not to gasp out with the shock.

The three keep their distance.

“Now,” spoke the first man. “I must explain to you, Mister –“ He pauses. “I’m sorry, I didn’t ask you your name…”

Lie! “Syed.” Why didn’t you lie?!

“Well, Syed, this is nothing personnel. It’s just … well… instinct.”

And with that, I understood. “Please…” I beg. “Please, don’t.”

James turns his face a little away, his face unreadable. Victoria’s eyes seem to glimmer. As for the third…

“Please!” I throw myself at their mercy. “Please don’t! I have a daughter!”

Mia! Mia, my beautiful Mia!

I cling to the last memory of her. The way she smelt: sleep, talcum powder, fresh nappies.

Mia, I love you!

“You have a daughter?” The first man says slowly.

I can’t feel my lungs as I take slow breaths. I count the silence in my head.

One Mississippi… two Mississippi… three Mississippi

“Then… I am sorry for her loss.”

My breath catches in my throat. My eyes wet with tears. “No… Please, no…”

All three of them smile a hungry smile.

“Please,” I plea, tears roll down my face. “Please…”

All three of them pounce and my screams echo through the darkness.

White Dusk - An Attempt to Write "Twilight" FanFic (Part 2)

Let's see if this works, shall we?

*

WHITE DUSK (A FanFic)

“Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.”
Marie Curie
“To the well-organised mind, death is but the next great adventure.”
Taken from 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' by JK Rowling

Preface
I screamed as the poison rushed through my blood stream.
I'm going to die! I'm dying! Why aren't you here stopping this?!
My body writhed on the floor, trying to extinguish the fire burning me from within.
I'm dying! Your life is meant to flash before your eyes when you die – and I see nothing! It's a lie! I'm dying, and I see nothing!
But I'm not dying. The me up to this point is dying. Once I'm gone, there will be something else in my place, a monster like the creature standing over me, their emotionless blood-red eyes glinting in the moonlight.

1: Forks
I woke up to the sound of rain and forgot where I was in the world.
Then I saw the green light thrown over the curtains and onto the ceiling and I remembered. Something inside me suddenly got crushed, like a canary being run over by a tractor.
Oh, great. I’m here…
I curled into a small ball under my duvet and closed my eyes. I didn’t know why I was reacting like this. I knew exactly what I was letting myself in for when I decided this. But never thought it would be this hard, this painful. And though I knew I shouldn’t blame my Mum for falling in love with my soon-to-be-stepdad, Dan, a tiny part of me did. I was happy that Mum was, but moving to another country, away from my family and friends, away from my school and job, away from my life to this unknowing was hard to swallow.
I sighed and forced myself to sit up and look at the time. As I landed in my new home that was America, I was expecting jet-lag. But I, surprisingly, was in sync with it. But today was going to be me finding my feet, getting use to my new house, my new town, and getting to know where everything was before I started the horror that was to come tomorrow.
Secondary school. Or, as the Amercians (was I one now?) called it, high school.
Shivering at this thought, I forced myself to get out of bed and get dressed, looking round my new bedroom. The walls looked so bare, I felt depressed just looking out them. There were a few empty shelves, which I immediate planned to use for favourite books and DVDs, had a small wardrobe and a small desk. On this desk was my laptop and, luckily, internet connection so I could stay in touch my friend back home…
No, this is home, I reminded myself. I live here now.
Sighing again, I got dressed quicker, went across the landing to the bathroom, cleaned my teeth and tried (yet failed) to make my black hair look neat. It looked like a haystack on top of my head.
Giving up, I went downstairs, almost tripping over a few cardboard boxes.
It seemed so stupid to me that, rather than Mum and me move in with Dan, that he sells his house and us to buy and live somewhere new. “It’ll be our home,” my Mum had said to me when we came to see Dan last time, before the move.
So, we had a new home. In a small town called Forks. Where there were hundreds of large, green trees, which must outnumber the humans that live here 100 trees to 1 human ratio. And Forks – my new “home” – was a town, not a city as it stated on its welcome sign – “The City of Forks Welcomes You”.
I’m trying to find faults with this place, I realised as I glanced out of the window in the hall and just saw green. Why is America shown on UK TV as sexy and fun? Not just plain green?
I walked into my new kitchen and saw my soon-to-be-stepbrother, sitting at the table, reading a newspaper.
“Morning,” I suddenly had to stifle a yawn.
Xavier looked up from his paper. “Morning,” he smiled, his white teeth catching my attention.
The one main pro about getting a new stepdad, is that fact that I was getting a new stepbrother. The older brother I always kinda wanted. What made him even cooler was the fact he was training to be a doctor and that he was here while Mum and Dan were still down south, trying to sell his house.
“Shouldn’t you be catching up on your z’s?” Xavier asked, closing the paper.
“I slept a lot on the plane,” I commented, sitting down opposite him.
“So, how’s Forks for you?”
“Green.” There was no other word to describe it.
“You’ll get use to it.”
“Yeah,” I sighed. But what if I didn’t? “So, what’s your plans for today?”
It was weird, but Xavier and me just clicked when we first met. It was, as if, we knew each other all our lives. We just talked about stuff. Important and not-so-important. So, even now, that I had just done possible the hugest thing in my whole life, it seemed only natural to talk to Xavier like this.
“I have to study.” He sighed. “And finish a paper.”
“An essay?” Already, the differences between our two worlds were evident.
“It’s dull.” He waved a hand. “What about you?”
“Make my room more… well… me, I guess.” I admitted, even though this truly meant that I was doing nothing.
“You should check this place out.”
“What? The house?”
“The town.” Xavier made a gesture with his hand. “I mean, you are going to live here.”
Thanks for reminding me. “I would, but I need a car to do so. I don’t have one.”
“You can drive, though.” Xavier pointed out. The last time I was here to meet Dan and Xavier, I took my driving test and, by some weird yet amazing miracle, I passed. “You could borrow mine.”
“But you’re going back to medicinal school in a few weeks. You need your car.”
“You could…” Xavier said slowly, his pale eyes going all mysterious, “you can always keep it.”
I barked a laugh. “Me? Keep Your car? How would you cope?”
“I got an upgrade.”
Suddenly, my brain catch the words. It defrag their meaning and I repeated the words. “You… got… upgrade?”
“Yes.” Xavier said. “My car is going to dust and I bought myself an upgrade. It didn’t cost me, so… as a ‘Welcome to your new home’ present, I’m giving you my old car.”
I stared at him. “You… car… huh?”
“I’m – giving – you – a – car.” He said, as if telling a toddler. “Be – happy.”
“I – I am happy.” I said, stunned. “Just – just wasn’t expecting it.”
Xavier rolled his eyes. “Here.” He handed me the keys to his car. “There. Now, let’s see it and see what will need.”
He got up. Automatically, I got up too. I was stunned. I followed him out of the house onto the front garden – no, front lawn – and saw his car. No, my car.
It was an old Ford Festia, with two doors and a boot (aka trunk). I was a passaenger in this car yesterday after my planes from the UK to Phoenix then from Phoenix to Port Angeles. I slept for a short while in the car, as well. It had a good CD/radio system.
“Do you like it?” Xavier asked, looking a little worried.
“I… I don’t know what to say.” I was still stunned. “Thank you.” Then I frowned. “Where’s your new car?”
Xavier smiled at me, mischievous. “Who said anything about a car?”
I blinked, then I saw the new, slick black motorbike that sat neatly next to Xavier’s – no, my – car. My mouth fell opened.
“I changed my mind,” I blurted out. “You have the car, I have the motorbike.”
“Tough. You have the keys to the car. Not changing now.” He looked at me.
“Mean.” I pulled a face. “You do realise that our parents are going to freak when they see that.”
“I know.” Xavier’s smile broadened. “But what kind of older brother would I be to you if I didn’t go off the rails once in a while.”
I stared at my car. My car. That was weird, thinking this car as mine. But, at least it would make life a little easier. Tomorrow was going to be a little less worse than I imagined. But first, I would need to find it.
Later, I decided. At the moment, I wanted to attack my bedroom, and spend some time with my awesome stepbrother. No… no, I didn’t like using that term. Stepbrother. That sounded wrong. Brother. No, Xavier was my brother. I prefer that.
“Can you help me put some posters on my walls,” I asked, “before you go off the rails, of course?”
He shrugged. “I could squeeze you in.”
It took us just over an hour to make my room feel more lived in. I had tons of film posters stuck to one of my walls and we filled several shelves with books and DVDs. We ever put up on magnetic whiteboard where half of it had photos, postcards, maps, old London Underground tickets – memories of my old life in England. The other half was there for notes or reminders that I had to do. Xavier wrote “Thank Xavier for awesome gift!”
“Don’t push it.” I commented, as if talking about the weather.
It was still raining, but dizzying. More like British weather, but still unnatural American at the same time. So, the weather wasn't as bad as I expect or feared when I made a break from the house to my car. I did some research on my new home and discovered that Forks was one of the – if not, the – place to get the most rainfall and near-constant cover of cloud in the United States. Not much weather difference to my homeland.
Once I was in the car, I quickly checked over everything: radio, CD player, heater and my digital camera several times over. My hobby was photographic was trying in a slight obsession. Once I done that, I drove my new town.
I found practically found everything within half an hour. I discovered the local supermarket (aka general store), the police station (aka the sheriff's office), several diners and shops (most of these were linked to hiking in someway shape or form) and the library. I got a card for it, but discovered that it didn't hold the books I like. Maybe I would use the library more for schoolwork.
I think I would have discovered everything quicker, if I didn't stop every few minutes to take photos. I hated to admit it, but the scenery was beautiful. The way the trees caught what little light there was, and the colours of the leaves. So different from back home. I took several photographs of an old sign, informing that there was a Native America reservation, La Push, further up the road. I had to fight the temptation to drive up there that instant, but decided that I would go at the weekend. Give me something to look forward too.
I only had one problem, and it was a big problem. It was, also, quite stupid. I couldn't my new school.
I drove round the town for an extra half an hour, trying to find Fork High School. But nothing. I got myself more lost and more confused. I had to stop several times to get my bearings.
But I couldn't find it. Was my sense of direction that bad?
I pulled over one last time, trying to mental backtrack. The school, like most things in this town, had to be off the highway. Had I missed it? But now, looking round, I realised that I was in the middle of nowhere. Just in a road in the middle of a forest. There were no houses, no people to ask for directions.
I drove over a bridge, I knew that, so I could drive back, then I would be back at square one.
That was when I saw the unpaved road.
It looked more like a dirt-track, but it looked recently used.
My first instinct was to turn the car around and floor it. What did it matter that I didn't know where my High School was. I would just follow everyone else.
But, I didn't listen to my first instinct. I put in gear and, slowly, drove up the road.
The road snaked through the trees for a long time. I was beginning to think that maybe this lead nowhere when the trees lessened and disappeared to reveal a shockingly stunning house.
I forced myself to stop the car and got out, feeling slightly awe-struck. It was three storeys tall and it painted faint white. All the windows caught the light perfectly while the trees perfectly protect it with their long branches. The house looked like something out of a fairy tale. The house looked timeless, effectless.
I was so caught up with it, I almost didn't see the two people walking towards me. But I looked quickly at them, before glancing back at the house.
There was a young man and a young woman. The man looked built like a tank, his muscles on full-display through his tight T-shirt, making my own body-confidence take an instant nosedive. He had short black hair, dark brown eyes and his skin was dark, making me instantly think of the La Push sign I saw.
The young woman that was walking beside him was total opposite. She was smaller than him, and her skin was chalk white. Her hair was light brown and a little wavy. Unlike her friend, she looked so gracefully in her movements.
Until she tripped herself up.
The man caught her in time, but she caught herself at exactly the same time. She smiled at him as she said, “I'm fine, Jake. You worry too much.”
Both of them looked at each other for a moment. I took a step back, feeling as if I was ruining the moment, and both their heads snapped round.
Oh, heck!
“Er... hi!” I tried to sound like I just got out of the car.
Both of the them took a step or two closer to me. I saw now that both of them were stupidly good-looking. My self-confidence took another nose-dive. So much so I lost my trail of speech and I forgot what I was going to say.
“Can we help you?” asked the girl. Oh God, even her voice sounded attractive.
“Er...” Why did I drive here? I'm going to leave with nothing of myself, am I? “Yes, hi. I'm lost. I'm new in town and trying to find Forks High School.”
I was suddenly aware of my British accent and what surprised me was neither of them seemed surprised of it. No one knew I was British, did they? But the look of their faces looked as if... as if they knew...
“Oh, yes.” The girl smiled. “I go there. We might be classmate.” Dare God, I hope not, seeing as my self-confidence is fading fast. “I'm Renesmee. Renesmee Cullen. But my friends call me Nessie. This is Jacob. Jacob Black.”
“Hi,” He smiled. His smile was nice. He meant the smile. I get a sense when someone's smile is real or not. “Welcome to Forks.”
He offered his hands, and I took it. His hand practically swallowed mine. His skin was boiling hot, but I wasn't sure if I was imagining that or not.
“Thanks,” I pulled my hand away. “I'm so stupid. I have no sense of direction. I almost drove into La Push by mistake.”
“I live there.”
“Oh.” By the way he said that, I had offended him. Great. I'm making so many friends! “I'm going to check out over the weekend. If I don't get any homework.”
Renesmee leaned in. Jacob saw this out of the corner of his eye and his face went a little hard.
“Anyway,” I pretended I hadn't noticed. “Directions?”
“Oh, yes.” Renesmee smiled again.
She gave me directions to the school and I realised where I had made my mistake. As she talked, I kept noticing that she was leaning closer to me. I kept taking a small side-step, not wanting to invade her space, but she kept leaning closer to me. Jacob was seeing this and his face was getting harder, his smile becoming more fixed. And what was with her? She kept sniffing me, as if I was wearing cologne or something.
Suddenly, an alarm bell began to ring inside my head. Get out of there! Get out of there! Leave now!
“Thank you so much!” I pushed a smile on my face.
“No probs.” Renesmee smiled, making herself go back to Jacob's side.
“Yeah, no problems.” Jacob said, his voice low. I looked at him and the look I got back had a message I completely understood. Stay away from my chick.
“I... I have to go.” Lame. Try again. “I have so much stuff to do before tomorrow. Unpack, email some friends.”
“Oh.” That wasn't what Renesmee wanted to hear. But then an expression flashed across her face. I was confused by her own reaction.
“Yeah, sorry. I... I see you tomorrow, though. Or at La Push.” I quickly added. “See you both later.”
I didn't wait for their goodbyes. I must have come across as rude, but that look Jacob gave me and the alarm bell inside my head had mentally freaked me out. I didn't understand why I was reacting like this. I've never felt like this around other people before. Maybe I was suffering from jet lag.
I walked quickly back to my car, got it and, slowly, turned my car around and drove down the drive to main road. Both Renesmee and Jacob watched me drive away.

White Dusk - An Attempt to Write "Twilight" FanFic

Okay, I've tried twice to upload my attempted chapter for a Twilight FanFic I wrote ("White Dusk"), but seeing as my laptop isn't happen with me, I'm changing this entry slightly.

So, the basic plot. Last year, I was dared to write a Twilight Saga Fanfic (sense a pattern forming within last few blogs) and I decided to have a go. I thought it would be fun to write something light after writing and editing my last writing project.

So, I thought of plot, new characters, lines characters could say, chapter titles, listen to podcasts for titbits or advice and I tried to write it. I had a title I loved - "White Dusk" and two new characters - Alex and his soon-to-be stepbrother, Xavier - that I couldn't stop writing about!

But, I couldn't do it. For two reasons. First, from what I heard on podcasts, they were like real novels, with long chapters and meaty plots and weird pairings! In one reading of a fanfic, I thought Harry Potter was going to pop up then go, "Ooops! Sorry! Wrong Fanfic!" And the second reason was I felt uncomfortable writing with Stephenie Meyer's characters and I never felt like I wrote with they help. The only character I enjoyed writing with was Jasper and he couldn;t carry the story on his own. So I stopped.

But, I found my old notes and chapter attempt. Can't upload chapter, but can upload other stuff. So... Ready?

EASTER EGGS (Lines Characters Say)
Rosalie: “Oh, great. We're having another Bella situation.”

Jasper: “Alex, will be please calm down?”
Alex: “No, I bloody will not!”

Alex: “Who – what – are you?”

Alex: “I’m sorry, I just got nearly attacked by a scarily huge wolf with huge dagger-like teeth and you want to know what colour fur it had?! Seriously, Jacob, were you dropped on your head when you were a baby or something?”

Xavier: “When life gets you down, you know what you got to do?”
Alex: “Just keep swimming?”
Xavier: “I was going to say put your iPod on full volume and listen to Muse, but let’s go with Finding Nemo. Disney is never usually wrong.”

Xavier: “There are some things we’re not proud of. For example, I can’t say the words penguin and comment.”

Emmett: “You know what they say? Life’s a –"
Esme: “Language!”
Emmett: “Sorry.”

Alice: “Bella, would you stop whining and help me with this?”

Alex: "It's not a lion and lamb situation."

Alex: “Oh my God! Have I entered a JK Rowling novel or something?!”

Alex: “When did vampires and werewolves become suddenly popular?”

Alex: “My life sucks.”
Emmett: “And we haven’t started drinking your blood yet.”

Emmett: “Look who it is. It’s our resident Big Bad Wolf.”
Jacob: “I can pwn you if you’re not careful, leech.”
Emmett: “Bring it on then, mutt.”

Alex: "Sorry, but you guys have been together how long? Geez, get your rears in gear and just get married already!" (seconds later) "Do you have to do that? Bitter singleton over here."

Alex: “What are you doing?”
Edward: “Reading.”
Alex: “I can see that. Dare I ask who it’s by? Anne Rice or Bram Stoker?”
Edward: “If I hadn’t seen that one coming and thought it was actually funny, I would be laughing right now.”

Xavier: “Do you ever wonder why Mary and Bert never got it on Mary Poppins?”
Alex: “Oh, I don’t know. Why would Julia Andrews not get together with Dick Van Dyke, a guy with a name that is the butt of many jokes, who does a mind-numbing mid-afternoon TV show and has the worse cockney accent known to man? Honestly, I can’t see why she didn’t jump on him there and then.”

(My Fave Now) - Alex: "The stars are going out.”
