Movie News!

Because of Comic-Con, books-turned-into-movies have filled Twitter. So, here I am, trying to pick some things I think you guys NEED to know.

First, Divergent. While we have no news on the movie as of yet, author Veronica Roth has revealed that Allegiant will be told from Tris's and Four's points of view. The fandom exploded over this reaction! And with 4 eNovellas bring released over the next few months told from Four's point of view, looks like the fandom will get its dose of its sexy hunk.

Next, Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters. The movie has wrapped recently and the logo has been revealed as thus:

Simple, yet looks good. Maybe... this is a sign that we might get an annoucement of Frostbite being turned into a movie soon (too soon! But I know you fans want this movie to be a success!)

Maze Runner. I am bit late to the party on this one, I'm afraid. And I hope to try and read the book before the movie comes out. But, as I'm not sure what's right and not on this, here is the movie's logo.

TRAILERS! Well... two to be exact. The first is Ender's Game, a movie which seems to have split audience's because of the author's views of gay marriage (though I believe he had very little/no input into making the movie to my knowledge). I'm not entirely if I would feel morally comfortable watching the movie because of this (maybe I'll rent the DVD), but I know some of you guys are fans of the series so, here is the movie trailer!

AND CATCHING FIRE! The fandom seems to have exploded over this and taking apart the trailer for clues of where these scenes are taken from... Yes, we have a trailer and yes, WE SEE FINNICK!!!

And oh, before I go, to all you Avengers fans, it has been revealed that Maria Hill (aka Cobie Smulder) is featured in the first episode of Agents of SHIELD (No news on which UK TV channel will be airing this) but with her commitments to the final series of How I Met Your Mother, she will appear very rarely. But if ABC renew the show for a second season, you never know... And, Joss Wheldon has revealed the title for the second Avengers movie, and it is:

Catching Fire Teaser Trailer!

Last night in the USA, the teaser trailer for Catching Fire was revealed. And, of course, the fandom exploded! It kinda reacted like this...

So, have you seen it yet? If not, it's HERE!

AND THIS IS THE TEASER TRAILER, PEOPLE! THE TEASER! Just imagine what the real full-length trailer will be like!

I adore it. It fills me with such hope. I adore that the politic undertones are there! I love that we hear Snow talk about Katniss and him wanting her dead as she has become a threat. I love the graffiti which I missed the first few times - The Odds Are Never in Our Favor. I love how we don't see any of the victors - a very smart move so we keep waiting for the trailers and giving the fans something to look forward to. And NO SHAKY CAMERAS! It looks cleanly-shot.

My only worry is that people are going to see as a Gale-driven trailer. We only see Peeta for a few scenes and that's it. With Gale, we see quite a bit of him (but then, that happens in the book!).

Reactions guys. What are your reactions?

City of Bones Trailer!

Who fancies seeing the trailer of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones movie trailer? Anyone? Well, you are in luck...

My reactions: am actually surprised. I have watched trailers to book adaptions and loved them, only to watch the movie and go "Oh God! That was awful!". So, while I am very surprised over how good this trailer is (the CGI [the door and demons!], the accents, the "Mom, I'm coming home!"-"No, no, no! You can't come home. You understand me. You don't come home!" exchange [very Mother/Daughter] , I am going to keep an open mind over this movie till I watch it (although I do want the Infernal Devices trilogy to become a movie series. That would ROCK!).

But there's one thing that bugs. Just one thing. The runes! OMG, the runes! There meant to be tattoos but they look like make-up and those temporary tattoos you get when you were a child! They don't look like tattoos!

More Beautiful Creatures and Blackwood News

Right, I know this is revealed last week, but we have another Beautiful Creatures trailer and... well... it kick  butt! I love it! I am SO dragging my family and friends to this. Sorry everyone I know and love, but you will (hence my plan to read the whole series next year). So, here's the new trailer... and Emma Thompson is AWESOME! Just saying!

Second of all, fans of Blackwood by Gwenda Bond, get excited. News has been released that MTV is developing a TV show based on it. Kelsey Grammar's (Frasier to you and I) production company, Gramnet Prods, will be producing the show with Lionsgate TV and comic book and TV writer Peter Calloway will be writing the pilot. If MTV like the pilot, then we MIGHT get a full blown series!

Now, for those of you who haven't read this (like me), Blackwood follows Miranda and Phillips, two teens with their own troubles. Miranda is a misfit teen from Roanoke Island's most infamous family and Phillips is an exiled teen criminal who can hear the dead. They are forced together when the Lost Colony legend repeats itself. Hundreds of years ago, 114 people vanished without a trace. And it happened again. And one of the new 114 people missing is Miranda's father...

City of Bones Movie Trailer!

So, earlier today, the trailer of CITY OF BONES was revealed. And everyone got excited. Sadly, I couldn't find the trailer till half an hour ago so my reactions are still kinda raw...

Doesn't this look great? And seeing how filming finished a week ago, this is bloody good. I did have my doubts (I still do on one or two things), but I feel that the movie makers are going to give us everything and from everyone's reactions, all the fans of the books are excited!

Now, to wait till August 2013 (AUGUST?! seriously?)

But guys, what are your reactions? Do you like what you see or left a bit underwhelmed?

The Host Trailer

As you guys probably know, Stephenie Meyer has been busy promoting the last Twilight Saga movie, Breaking Dawn: Part Two. But did you know that her adult sci-fi novel, The Host, has been turned into a movie and will be released next year?

Now, I really love this book, so I have high hopes for the movie and the trailer has been released. And it looks more action-driven then love-driven, but I have high hopes. What are your reactions?

The Bone Season's Film Rights

Sorry! I got the email yesterday but forgot to upload it. SORRY! (I haven't heard of this book till now, if I am TOTALLY honest with you, but am aware now! I sense good things from this series...)

THE IMAGINARIUM STUDIOS ANNOUNCES
INAUGURAL SLATE OF FILMS

Performance Capture Studio Founded by Andy Serkis and Jonathan Cavendish secure rights to “The Bone Season” and “Animal Farm”

Beautiful Creatures Teaser Trailer!

Yes, I know I haven't read the Beautiful Creatures series, but I am SUPER EXCITED about the movie. I just love the idea of it. And, earlier today/yesterday, the teaser trailer was released!

OH MY GOD! Doesn't it look GREAT?! Sorry friends and family members of mine. We are going to watch this when it comes out! And I look like I have to attack my local bookshop/Amazon for the series (unless Puffin UK would like to treat me... ONLY JOKING, PUFFIN! Will happily buy this myself!). Sorry in advance to my poor bank account/credit card.

Also, it was revealed the poster!

I LOVE how the words Beautiful Creatures is in the same style as used on the US and UK covers!

So, reactions? Do you love the trailer? Or not? Or did you squeal when you heard Florence and the Machine? LEAVE COMMENTS AND LET ME KNOW!

(Oh, before I sign off, I want to thank Braiden from Book Prode for showing me the trailer & poster and Jeffrey West, Girls in the Stacks and Cass Jay Tucker for hyperventilation with me. And of course, Cass for her reaction video (Jeffrey will do one tomorrow, I hope!). I love Cass's reaction. "OH! THAT'S FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE!" I love her!)

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time - Movie Review

Earlier this week, I reviewed the Japanese classic The Girl Who Leapt Through Time by Yasutaka Tsutsui (haven't read it? Here you go!). And, after watching the trailer and one fan-made music video (using the movie against the song "Must Be Dreaming" by Frou Frou. Both of which are below), I treated myself the movie (so you guys knows, there are apparently several versions. This is the 2006 version, just so you know).

The film is, according to Wikipedia, is a loose sequel to the book as it tackles the same subject matter but there are different characters and the story is slightly different.

So, the movie. 17 year old Makoto gains this ability after an accident in her high school chemistry lab, (and then almost getting killed at a train crossing). After this discovery, she immediately sets about improving her grades and preventing personal mishaps with her and her friends, Chiaki and Kōsuke. Before long however, she realizes that even innocuous changes can have terrible consequences. And consequences she couldn't possible imagine...

This isn't the same as the book. Let's make this clever as I am a book loyalist when it comes to film-based-on-book. This takes the bases of the story and let the story breathes. And this is a good thing for me as I watched the film and go "I like where this film's going".

Also, the film did some things that I felt was missing in the book, like character development and feeling that the characters did have feelings for each other. And in this film, there was character development! There was moments where you went "He likes her!"

While I do think that, if you fancy reading the book then you should, but if you do, then you should watch this film as well. The film is such a good little gem and makes me want to rewatch my Studio Ghibli films (I only own three. Maybe FilmFour should do a season of them all...)

Taylor Swift is on the Hunger Games soundtrack...?

No SMILE blog this week (to give you guys a nice Christmas break), but last week, interesting news reach the world of Twitter.

Taylor Swift revealed on Twitter that she will be release a song entitled "Safe and Sound" with The Civil Wars. And this is the first single from the Hunger Games soundtracks. AND HERE IT IS!

What are your reactions to this piece of news and music? I always a score for The Hunger Games movie but, after listening to it, I quite like it. But am not sure I understand why Liongate is releasing songs for a dystopian movie...

Daughter of Smoke and Bone MOVIE NEWS

Yesterday, news was revealed that the movie rights for Laini Taylor's DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE was snapped up by Universal after a fierce bidding war with Paramount. Twitter went nuts with this news and this morning, Hodder sent the following press release:

NEWS RELEASE
UNIVERSAL PICTURES ACQUIRES CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED
FANTASY NOVEL DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE

Los Angeles, CA, December 14, 2011 — Universal Pictures announced today that it has acquired the worldwide rights to the celebrated fantasy novel Daughter of Smoke and Bone written by Laini Taylor. A highly sought after property in Hollywood, the book was
published this September and is the first in a trilogy. Universal’s Co-Presidents of
Production Peter Cramer and Jeff Kirschenbaum made the announcement.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone was released in over 25 countries to critical acclaim and has been one of the most well-received books of the year. Honours include Amazon.com Top Ten Books of 2011, Publishers Weekly Best Books 2011 and the New York Times Notable Books of 2011.

The novel has also been hailed by UK critics – the Guardian called it, “Remarkable and beautifully written… The opening volume of a truly original trilogy.” And the Sunday Telegraph said, “For once the frenzy over a teen novel is justified. Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor is one of those books that blots out reality, so consumed do you become in its fantasy world.”

At the news of the acquisition, Laini Taylor said, “My goal is always to write stories that readers will want to climb inside of and live in, and which – I hope – will allow them to just lose themselves in the page. It is a hugely thrilling prospect to think about Universal and filmmakers translating my world onscreen and giving it a second life in such a grand way. I’m over the moon.”

Jane Putch, Taylor’s manager and producing partner, said, “Taylor is a stunning visual writer, whose superbly developed characters shape a plot filled with intrigue, epic wars, love, betrayal and ‘teeth.’ I can’t wait to see her world on screen!”

Daughter of Smoke and Bone is published in the UK by Hodder & Stoughton. The second book in the trilogy will be published in September 2012.

Taylor is managed by her producing partner, Jane Putch of Eyebait Licensing & Management. Attorney Peter Nelson of Nelson David Wetzstein oversaw the acquisition.

Are Fairy Tales Next Year's Big Thing?

I have been thinking this for a while now, but I was wondering if fairy tales will be next year's trend in the world of YA fiction? I know that dystopia novels have become popular this years (thanks to the huge success of The Hunger Games) and I do believe that this will continue over the course of 2012, but I am wondering if retellings of fairy tales will be fighting it out for a place in our bookshelves (as well as in our DVD collections and on our TVs).

Apart from the novels by Jackson Pearce (the hugely successful Sisters Red and Sweetly) and the movies Red Riding Hood (directed by Catherine Hardwicke and starring Amanda Seyfield) and Beastly (from the novel by Alex Flinn and starring Alex Pettyfer & Vanessa Hudgens) which most people feels was less than desired, 2012 seem to be the year that we're getting retold fairy tales more in our faces...

Both Universal Studios and Relativity Media are going head-to-head in their retelling of Snow White. While Relativity Media's Mirror Mirror seems to take a the whimsical and comedic look at the fairy tale, Universal's Snow White And The Huntsman goes down a dark, almost Lord of the Rings (and this movie is rumoured to be a start of a trilogy...) And we are still awaiting news about Disney's live action story of Maleficent, the evil queen from Sleeping Beauty and the mysterious The Order Of The Seven, Disney's reboot of Snow White set in China in the 19th century (no news on whether this film will be live action, animated or CGI)...

Not only is the battle being fought at the cinemas, but TV is also a battleground. Two of the biggest US TV networks are using "fairy tales in the real world" ideas. ABC has Once Upon A Time, a fantasy drama, while NBC has Grimm, a cop show that has characters inspired from the Grimm Fairy Tales. Both of these shows are rumoured to be coming to the UK, but no news on which channel has picked them up [EDIT: Grimm is rumoured to be going to the channel Watch. Once Upon A Time still hasn't been confirmed, though I suspect either Channel 4 or Channel 5.]

Now, do I think this will be the big thing for next year? I'm not sure. I will be intrigued to see if this has staying power. When vampires was the big thing, it lasted for several years as did magic (thank you Harry Potter and Twilight) and while we seem to be in the grip of dystopia, it will be very interesting to see fairy tales spark the imagination for both children and adults...

The Hunger Games Trailer

Earlier today, Good Morning America (a breakfast show on ABC in the USA) revealed the trailer for The Hunger Games... and here it is!

Reactions, ladies & gentlemen?

The Hunger Games Character Posters!

Yesterday, Liongate revealed, from several different online locations, character posters for The Hunger Games. It was simple, yet effective posters. And, the lovely people at Hypable, got them all together and here they are...

And here is the only poster, where the character is looking to the right. Well, with the lead being Katniss, THEY HAD TO!!!

I really like them, much to my surprise. I'm still not 100% certain on Lenny Kravitz being Cinna (he's my fave character hence my resistance to him), but I love Rue's poster (it's perfect and heartbreaking) and whenever I look at Effie's poster, I feel the urge to laugh. It's tacky and it's perfect for her! Still not sure about Cato's poster (as I can't remember his character) but I thought we would see President Snow or Foxface. Now, that would be interesting to see...

Also, reported from Hypable, the real name of Foxface will be revealed in the movie! The actress playing Foxface, Jackie Emerson, revealed that the film will reveal her character's name as Suzanne Collins was heavily involved in the script writing process. She even, to my knowledge, wrote the first draft of the movie.

But what are you guys think of the posters and the news of Foxface's real name being revealed?

WHITE CROW by Marcus Sedgwich MOVIE NEWS! (& quick City Of Bones Movie News)

Let's chat about Marcus Sedgwick. As you know, I recently reviewed Marcus' latest novel MIDWINTERBLOOD and from that, I discovered that Marcus is adapting his novel, My Swordhand is Singing, into a stage play (was quite excited about that - make it come to London or Essex!). But, randomly, I discovered that the film rights to another novel of his, White Crow, has been snapped up and will begin filming as early as NEXT YEAR!

Hypable exclusively revealed the press release and it makes VERY interesting reading! Here is it in full:

Independent financier and production company Kerry, Kimmel and Pollack (KK&P) has secured the rights and will co-finance and co-produce the novel WHITE CROW, written by Marcus Sedgwick. The film will be produced and/or executive produced by Kami Garcia, NYT bestselling co-author of The Beautiful Creatures Series, Mark Morgan (The Twilight Saga), Michael Pollack (Quattrocento) & Brett Hudson (Cloud 9).

WHITE CROW is a psychological thriller that centers on a 16 year-old girl who moves to a sleepy seaside town with a deadly past, and discovers what’s on the other side of death.

KK&P plans to shoot the film in the fall of 2012 on Isle of Man, located within the British Isles.

The author, Marcus Sedgwick, has been nominated for the Carnegie Medal, the Edgar Allan Poe, and the Guardian Children’s Book Prize.

WHITE CROW marks Kami Garcia’s entrance into the world of film and television production. While some Young Adult and Adult authors are currently producing their own novels, Garcia is not only producing her upcoming solo novel Unbreakable: Book 1 in The Legion Series from Little, Brown (also with Mark Morgan and KK&P), but other film and television properties as well.

Now, as I've only recently read my first Marcus Sedgwick, am very intrigued over this. I am very intrigued that one half of the Beautiful Creatures series, Kami Garcia is either produce and/or executive produce this film. As some of you LOVE the Beautiful Creatures series (I haven't read it!), it will be interesting to see what she does to it...

But I love this news! Can't wait to get my teeth into this...!

Also, random add-on and not connected with Marcus Sedgwick, is the movie vision of Cassnadra Clare's City of Bones. It has been revealed by Hypable & Mundie Moms that Marlene King is writing the screenplay. For those of you who are wondering, she is the showrunner for the Pretty Little Liars TV series! So, hopefully, the film will start getting filmed soon!

Breaking Dawn: Part One Trailer

Last night, the trailer of Breaking Dawn Part One was revealed. And here it is!

Now, I've only just watched it now and my reaction is surprising. I don't know much about this director - Bill Condon - but it looks like he's going to try and make the first half of Breaking Dawn more action than romantic (and that's there by the buckle-load!). And it seems to me that all the Cullens have changed their hair (this is a running joke. Watch Jasper's hair through all four of the films and you'll see what I mean).

But, yeah, am surprised and quite pleased with this trailer. But what do you guys think?

Hunger Games Teaser Trailer

On Sunday at the MTV VMAs, we were shown the first teaser of THE HUNGER GAMES. This was introduced by Jennifer Lawerence (aka Katniss), we were shown this...

Reactions? Well, on Twitter from what I've seen, it's been mostly positive. There has been one or two "is that it?" and I feel like that. But this is a teaser to the trailer so I will wait before I past judgement, but from the looks of it, it feels right. But am going to wait for the real trailer and then the movie to past judgement.

But what do you guys think???

Retelling a Fairy Tale

This is how we see Snow White, is it not?

But recently, film companies are going back to fairy tales like Snow White to give them a darker edge to appeal to a new audience. It's basically saying "You thought you know the true story. Well, you were wrong...". The first to do this was Warner Bros with their version of Red Riding Hood, starting Amanda Seyfried and directed by Twilight's Catherine Hardwicke.

But now, it seems that film companies are turning their eye onto Snow White. And, within the last few days, Universal and Relativity Media have revealed pictures of their Snow Whites.

For Universal, the tale has been renamed "Snow White And The Huntsman" with Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth. This has been rumoured to being filming soon and that this film version could be the start of a trilogy.

For Relativity Media, this tale doesn't have a confirmed title but has the working title (on IMDB) as "The Brothers Grimm: Snow White". It starts Lily Collins, Julia Roberts and Sean Bean. Filming is already underway and it will be released several months before "Snow White and the Huntsman" (Lily Collins' version is rumoured to be out in March 2012 whereas Kristen Stewart's is rumoured to be out in June).

And here are the pictures of Lily Collins and Kristen Stewart as Snow White.

As you can see, these two pictures are showing very different tones to this fairy tales. And on IMDB, the tales are very different. For Lily Collins' version, IMDB says: "A dark twist on the classic fairy tale, in which Snow White and the seven dwarfs look to reclaim their destroyed kingdom" yet on MovieWeb, it says that this film is about "An evil queen and an exiled princess struggle for control of their kingdom in a spirited adventure comedy, filled with jealousy, romance and betrayal, that will capture the imagination of audiences the world over" and comes under the genre of comedy.

Whereas on Kristen Stewart's version, Snow White and the Huntsman is, according to IMDB, "In a twist to the fairy tale, the Huntsman (Hemsworth) ordered to take Snow White (Stewart) into the woods to be killed winds up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen (Theron)".

But the question I want to ask is Do we HONESTLY want a dark retelling of fairy tales? I mean, we all know fairy tales and, if you dig deep enough, you will find a dark past to them. I remember a quote by Terry Pratchett (I think it's from Hogfather) where he wrote something that adults tone down fairy tales because children are quite blood-thirsty creatures..

But there looks like we're going to get more of these retellings... Rumours are flying that Emma Watson is signed to star in a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, which will be directed or produced by Guillermo del Toro and Disney is getting a script together for a live-action movie about Maleficent, the baddie from Sleeping Beauty. Looks likes fairy tales and their dark retellings are going to be with us for quite some time...

Breaking Dawn: Part One Teaser Trailer

As some of you guys know, the teaser trailer for BREAKING DAWN: PART ONE was revealed to the world last night. (Not going to write up the teaser poster for BREAKING DAWN. Nothing exciting about it...) So, if you are a Bella, Edward or Jacob fan, have you seen the trailer?

Reactions? I'm surprised but I quite like it. I don't love the lingering shots but, apart from that, there's good vibes coming off this. *fingers crossed*

PS - I have heard rumours that if you're paying close attention, you might see the author, Stephenie Meyer, and scriptwriter of the films, Melissa Rosenberg, in this trailer...
