EXTRACT TIME! Oh yes, I have something fun to share, from a book that was released yesterday!

On the Broadwalk: A Memoir by Martin Sherman follows the acclaimed playwright’s life from 1930s New Jersey where he was born into a Jewish immigrant family all the way to 1970s Broadway at the premiere of his play starring Richard Gere, Bent. 

Along the way, he do a whisper-stop tour of Los Angeles, London, Woodstock, rub shoulders with celebrity royalty such as Meryl Streep, the Bee Gees and Joan Benz, all while tackling his struggles with his sexuality, the death of his mother who died tragically young and trying to make it in the theatre circuit. 

All with humour (sorry, I don’t know if I could have a memoir on this blog if it was too dark and depressing). Plus, with this book being foreworded by Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf! Magneto! West End! Broadway!) with praise from Stephen Fry, Alan Cumming, High Jackman, Vanessa Redgrave and Ruby Wax, this might be one for you that want to peek behind the scene of stage shows.

Dead Real Extract Alert

I got an extract for you guys! And I think you guys are going to like it! Best way to describe this book is “Heartstopper meets Shaun of the Dead”.

Let me give you a quick synopsis of Poppy T Perry’s Dead Real and you’ll see what I mean.

Nora wants to tell her horror movie superfan best friend, Ruby, that she is in love with her. Totally, absolutely, completely going to tell her. So what if someone’s written on the toilet wall that Nora’s frigid? Or that her old friends say that all bisexuals are attention seekers? Bloodtide & Bloodsong Extract

I have an extract for you guys and we’re going spy! 

No, not Totally Spies, James Bond or Slow Horses, but Alias Emma by Ava Glass. And I have an extract from her third outing, The Trap.

FEAR THIS POST FOR IT WILL GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT (only there are differing opinions of when the witching hour is as that’s when I wanted to schedule this. The hour after midnight [12am to 1am] or the time between 3am to 4am. There’s some that say it’s between 2am till 4am!)

ANYWAY (let’s get off that random trail of thought!), I have an extract for you guys and it’s a good’un!

Who Watches This Place by Amy Clarkin is the ghostly sequel to What Walks These Halls and we are back with the Paranormal Surveyance Ireland as they are offered a new job. Strange and disturbing happenings are happening at a new start up, hence why the new owners asked Arthur, his sister Raven and other members to investigate. 

But when a startling disappearance reveals tensions within the group, one has the wonder whether they can overcome them, especially when one of their friends is in danger of suffering a horrific fate? 

Now, I am surprise intrigued about this as I really liked the queer and disability representation elements of What Walks These Halls as well as found family and the spooky Irishness so very excited to sink my teeth into the sequel once I get my grubby little hands on it.

One Last Song by Nathan Evan is a queer novella about Jim and Joan, two gentlemen in a care home and what happens when Joan arrives, a whirlwind that triggers Jim. The battle is on, but under both their armour plating, both are hiding sides of themselves…

I’m not going to go too in-depth over this as I have plans to read this myself and I want to know as little as possible. It sounds like something that will tickle me pink (no pun intend) and I might plan someone on Instagram when I do start reading it.

The Disappearance Boy Extract

I have an extract for you guys! And, if all goes to plan, I am hoping to get my hands on a copy of this book and be reading it before the end of the year (yes, I have plans for this!)

The Disappearance Boy by Neil Bartlett follows Reggie Rainbow, the disappearance boy After having polio as a child and leaving him with a limp, his strong arms and nimble fingers make Reggie perfect for behind the scene theatres where he helps illusionist Mr Brooks’s assistant “disappear”. So when Mr Brooks takes a job down in Brighton, Reggie has to come to. But Brighton is a different world and Reggie finds that the sea air and the life of the Brighton Grand has its own magic. Soon, Reggie begins to wonder about secrets and how long he can keep them for a living… 

Like I said, I am hoping to read this in the coming week (possible over the Christmas period due to November being NetGalley November) so I am quite excited to hear your thoughts on the extract I am popping below.

Extract Of The Suburbs

I have an extract for you all today. And yes, it's a not fantasy or crime. I have checked and yes, I am feeling well. Honest. 

This extract is part of the Tales of the Suburbs by Justin David. Prequel novella of Kissing the Lizard and The Pharmacist and part one of the Welston World Saga, we follow Jamie who dreams of escaping his small town to be with the those strange yet beautiful creatures he sees in Smash Hits magazine. 

But being in a small town under the reign of Margaret Thatcher and trying to discover who you are isn't exactly easy. Over the course of Jamie's teen years where he survives secondary school, teen problems and art college where he follows in love with Billy. But then what? Does he escape to London or return to the safety of West Midlands...?

What Extract Walks These Halls

I have a spooOOOOOOooookkky extract for you guys for this blog tour. It was touch and go for a moment due to the saga happening with my Amazon and my kindle at the moment (see previous post for more details on that battle at the moment), but I have an extract and I didn't have to do some late night internet doom scrolling for creepy-yet-cool Irish ghost stories to get you excited for What Walks These Halls by Amy Clarkin. 

Hyacinth House is the most haunted house in Ireland. So haunted in fact, that it's not reported about at all. Raven doesn't remember what happened in Hyacinth House five years ago. Her father died in that house during a paranormal investigation and, though everyone says it was a terrible accident, Rave is certain that it was her fault. 

So when her younger brother, Arthur, decides to start up the family business of paranormal investigating and he's asked to investigate Hyacinth House for a house sale, he can't resist even though Raven is horrified by the idea... 

Éabha can see and hear things no one else can. She's not sure if it's emotions from the past, ghosts or something else, but she decides that she has to find out. When she crosses paths with Arthur and his ragtag team of paranormal hunters, she thinks it's a great place to start. 

But everyone has a secret or two to hide. And Hyacinth House has its own as well... 

Now, I am not the biggest ghost/horror reader, but I couldn't resist reading this (which is what I am doing now. At the time of writing this, I am on page 101), and when asked if I wanted to be involved in this tour, I couldn't say no!

I Am not Raymond Wallace Extract

I have an extract for you guys! It's a little grown up, but I think you will like it!

I Am not Raymond Wallace by Samuel Kenyon (Inkandescent) follows Raymond Wallace in Manhattan, 1963, a few weeks before the shocking events of President Kennedy's assassination. Raymond joins the New York Times newsroom on a three month bursary from Cambridge University. But it's not easy because, soon, he finds out that his boss is being blackmail by his estranged wife and he finds himself getting involved in the straight-laced Dotty's assignment about the "explosion of overt homosexuality" in the city. 

While on an undercover assignment, Raymond discovers a world where he feels like he can be himself and stop pretending to be someone else. This is where he meets Joey. But both men are in a time where the choice facing them is conformity or courage, and Reymond's decision will have far reaching consequences for decades to come until, in 2003 Paris, Joey meets a young man named Joe whose life is deeply connected to Raymond's...

A Cast of Falcons Extract

I have an extract for you all! And it happened on sheer impulse - and by that, I mean, after finishing Sarah Yarwood-Lovett's A Murder of Crows and discovering that I needed to know what happens next (that took me by surprise, truth be told), I (impulsively) emailed the publisher - Embla Books - and went "I want to do something to get everyone excited for the next book in the Dr Nell Ward series, A Cast of Falcons, as I need to know what's going to happen next to these characters". Next time I know, I got a reply going "Fancy sharing a small extract from A Cast of Falcons?"

And here we are! So, before I share a tiny sneak peek of A Cast of Falcons, let me tell you what this is about. 

When her oldest friend announces that she's impulsively engaged to the almost too good to be true Hawke McAnstruther, Dr Nell Ward rashly offers to host the wedding at her family's estate of Finchmere. But if she thinks it's going to be a joyful event, she's in for a nasty shock when she discover's her friend's parent strong dislike of their soon-to-be son-in-law. 

But before the ceremony is even over, Hawke's shady personal and professional lives begin to unravel and before the evening is out, a shocking murder takes place and the list of suspects is long. Nell finds herself investigating what happened at her home with her best friend, Rav, and PC James Clarke, desperate for the truth. But that might not be the only truth as Nell finds herself in the middle of a love triangle between Rav and James, and she's able to find out where her heart truly lives... if she lives long enough. 

Now, this isn't out till next month (the 18th, if I remember right), but excited to read the chapter and share a snippet. Now, I could have share the first, dramatic page or something more romantic to wet your appetite... decisions, decisions...

The Last Girl to Die Blog Tour

What's this? An extract from a crime novel that sounds utterly creepy, that fits perfectly for now as we slowly begin to enter autumn? How very nearly on brand for me... 

The Last Girl to Die starts with a desperate family. Their sixteen year old daughter has vanished after they move to the island of Mull, far off the coast of Scotland. But with hostile local and the Police that don't seem to care, the parents turn to private investigator, Sadie Levesque.

From The Lost Diary of Samuel Pepys

I have an extract from you! And it's from a book I'm actually reading at the time of writing this (I'm not far in, but so far, I'm enjoying myself). 

The diaries of Samuel Pepys have been read for centuries due to their detail account of the Great Fire of London, his racy assignments and his detail and wit. But, at the age of 36, he stopped writing. Or did he?

It's the summer of 1669 and England is in dire straits. The treasury has very limited funds and tensions with the powerful Dutch Republic are beginning to boil over. An investigator for the Crown was sent to look into corruption in the Royal Navy, only for him to be murdered. Samuel Pepys has been asked to look into the corruption and the possible murder. 

As he begins to look into this, his health is on the turn and his marriage is very close to collapsing. Can Pepys discover the sinister truth and make sure England doesn't get into a war...

Like I said earlier, I am currently reading The Lost Diary of Samuel Pepys by Jack Jewers and I'm enjoying myself, though I am not always the biggest fan of historical thrillers, but I am intrigued where this is going to go. 

So when I was asked by Midas PR if I wanted to share an extract, I jumped at it. I always like to share extracts from books that don't always fit my typical reading, but this caught my attention and as I am now (hopefully) out of a reading slump, this felt like the perfect time to try something new!

The Raven Heir Is Healing

Ok, this is kinda breaking my Summer of Love plans but you know me, I like to mix things up! And what better what to mix things up than to show off a guest post written by the lovely Stephanie Burgis, author of the coming soon middle-grade fantasy, The Raven Heir?

The first in the Raven Crown series follow Cordelia and her triplet siblings, Rosalind and Giles who are safely living in a castle at the centre of a forest, protected by spells that their mother have woven. But when the outside world comes crashing into their home, the triplets find themselves in danger. Two rivals and their solders have come for them as whoever is the eldest is heir to the throne. 

But since the Raven Crown was broken, no one has been abled to rule the kingdom and live. So when their mother refuses to tell and she is taken prisoner, the triplets have to go on the run and soon, their realise that deep magic is at work and the three might be the ones to save the kingdom devastated by a war that has raged for generations. They might, also, be the ones to tear their family apart.

And here I am with an guest post about... well, I'm going to leave it as a surprise, but I enjoyed myself hugely reading this and it's making me itch to go to a garden centre! This looks like it's going to be fun magical middle grade so can't wait to read and share my thoughts on at a later date...

This Extract Will Leave You Undone

I have an extract for you guys! And you might recognised the title as the author popped on the Pewter Wolf Reads a month ago. 

Undone by Leslie McAdams is one of the five new titles coming out next week as part of Vino and Veritas, one of the spin off series in Sarina Bowen's World of True North. 

Undone follows Jason, who thinks his new roommate, Murph, has awful taste in men. Murph is funny, full of life, special. Even a straight guy like Jason can see that. 

But Murph's dates... well... Jason yelled at one, kicked another out of the apartment and threw beer in a third's face. And he has no idea why he's reacting the way that he is. 

Jason's sister joked that maybe it's because he's jealous. Which is ridiculous... right?

Now, Leslie McAdams came on the blog last month and chatted about how she came about to write Undone and her involvement in the series (link to that post is here, FYI). So, I am thrilled to have a tiny extract from Undone to share with you after chatting with Leslie and her going "Oh, do you want to read a sneak peek and share with your readers?" (er... yeah! Monstrous Extract

BLOG TOUR ALERT!!! And it's full of monstrous designs and words... 

See what I did there? Well, I had to do something as am, I think, the last stop in the Monstrous Designs blog tour!

Moving away from that awful dad-joke, Monstrous Designs is the sequel to Dangerous Remedy by Kat Dunn and it's a queer fantasy set in the French Revolution (do I need to explain why I want to go to Paris and read this?). And yet, Monstrous Designs takes place in both 1794 Paris and London. In London, Camille and Al are desperately trying to track down a kidnapper of a close friend. As they do so, they find themselves pulled into a game full of lies and deceit, while a new enemy is watching and has dark, monstrous plans for them both... 

Meanwhile, in Paris, the Duc is playing his own dangerous game and with Ada in his thrall, old loyalties are thrown into question and everything is now under threat...

The Secret Extract of Albert Entwistle

EXTRACT ALERT! I have an extract for you guys and, oh, it's from a good'un of a book. Possible one of my faves of the year so far! Yes, it's THAT good! 

The Secret Life of Albert Entwistle by Matt Cain follows the life of 64 year old postman Albert, who loves his job, keeps himself to himself and has lived alone since the death of his mother 18 years ago (barring his cat, Gracie). But when he discovered that he's going to be forced to retire on his 65th birthday (Royal Mail policy), Albert realises that a lonely future awaits him which terrifies him. Realises that he's been hiding from life, Albert takes baby steps to being honest with himself and the world about who he truly is. Extract The Information From The Nemesis

I have an extract for you guys today! And it's a hum-dinger! So much so, I am closing the Nemesis blog tour! 

As you guys know, I love a good thriller. So, when I was asked if I wanted to be involved in the blog tour for Anthony Riches's Nemesis, I jumped at it. I'm not sure why, but this gave me strong vibes of crime thrillers I have been binge-watching during the UK's lockdowns and it just sounded perfect for me to read (Will hopefully do a review in the coming few weeks) and to chat about. 

Mickey Bale is an elite close protection officer. Which is why the Met Police has given his one fo the toughest jobs in the current climate: guarding the Minister of Defence at the moment when Chinese-British relations is at breaking point. 

But Mickey's is only working on. He's secretly waging war on a powerful London mafia gang family. One of their dealers supplier the ecstasy pill that killed his sister and Mickey wants them to suffer. He wants to take them down, one by one. 

But how far is he going to go? Will his Met colleagues realise that the man on an underworld killing spree one of their own? Or will he get away with it? 

You see why I HAD to be involved in this!
